What is Calorimetry? Calorimetry is basically the act of measuring how much chemical energy is stored in foods, whether the energy is released or absorbed. Now there are different ways to measure this chemical energy, and the device used to measure these changes in temperature is a calorimeter, and to be more specific, they are called Styrofoam cup, and the Bomb Calorimetry. Usually, when it comes to high school science, the equipment provided is limited, but are only meant to be a representation or a model of the real thing, due to it being so expensive. So when high school teachers want to perform calorimetry labs to find out how the energy from the food items affected the water’s temperature, then they would most likely be using a Styrofoam cup, or just a coffee cup calorimeter, which is not that accurate, but more affordable. The purpose can’t be more clear, the energy that was captured by the calorimeter is congruent to the energy obtained by the food item being burned. Using the “coffee cup calorimeter” decreases the accuracy of the temperature of the water after being tested, because it is also altered by the temperature of the surroundings, meaning that the results won’t be exact.Now, when it involves professional nutritionists that are responsible for determining the calorie content of their products, then it is obvious that accuracy is required. The type of calorimeter that they would be using would be a more expensive one that they refer to as a “bomb calorimeter,” which carries the same objective as the Styrofoam. The name has nothing to do with any of the functions of the object but it does have a “reaction section” where the reaction takes place. This is able to withstand strong hot gas that may also involve exploding. Now, because this is a professional object, instead of Alejandra Saavedra having a random thermometer as the one used for the Styrofoam calorimeter, this one has a wired electrical circuit that connects to the “reaction area” where it calculates the heat that was sent once the certain food item was put into test. Surrounding the “reaction area,” a layer of water with a thermometer inserted wraps around it, which activates when the heat from the “reaction area” starts to raise the thermometer up, giving us how much chemical energy was exerted.Either calorimeter that a performer uses when conducting a calorimetry lab, needs at the end, the formula that finally tells you how much chemical energy or calories were exerted from the certain object that the performer was using. Now what the answer revolves around is; “energy gained or lost by the water is equal to the energy lost or gained by the object under study,” according to (physicsclassroom.com), which is actually pretty accurate when you think about it. The water’s temperature is what is telling you how much energy was exerted from the object, meaning that what the object gave out, it will show in the water.
