The present study on “Effect of sowing dates and plant geometry on seed yield and quality in Okra Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench” was carried out in rainy seasons during 2017 at Vegetable Research fields, division of vegetable science, IARI New Delhi Climate and meteorological data Experimental details and layout The experimental material consisted of variety namely Pusa bhendi 5 developed by IARI, New Delhi. To evaluate yield and quality of seed due to differential dates of sowing and plant geometry, the seeds of variety Pusa bhendi 5 were sown in the field at 3 different dates covering rainy season. The sowing was done continuously at 15 days intervals starting from 15th June 2017 to 15th July 2017 in the rainy season On each date of sowing, the seeds were sown at three varied spacing’sThe details of treatments are as under:Sowing dates: as main plot treatmentsP1-15th JuneP2-30th JuneP3-15th July Spacing as sub plot treatments75 x 25cm60 x 25cm50 x 25cm Design of the experiment Split-split plot designThe plant population per plot in all the spacing’s were 32, 40 and 48 plants per plot respectively. The agronomic practices followed are briefly given below:Land preparationThe experimental field was prepared well by giving one deep Ploughing + two harrowing followed by planking to provide good tilth to the soil. Fertilizer applicationRecommended dose of fertilizers i.e. 100 kg nitrogen and 60 kg phosphorus per hectare were applied in each plot. Full dose of phosphorus in the form of single super phosphate and one third dose of nitrogen in the form of urea were applied as basal dose before sowing. Remaining two-third nitrogen was applied in two equal split doses as top dressing at 30 and 60 days after sowing. After sowing the seeds in plots, the hills were covered with well rotten farm yard manure. Seed source and seed treatmentGood quality seed of okra cv. Pusa bhendi 5 was obtained from Division of Vegetable Crops, IARI, New Delhi. SowingOn each sowing date as per schedule and treatment, the crop was sown in nine  plots i.e. at three spacings  each of three replications.Three seeds per l hill were dibbled in flat beds. When the crop attained 5-7 cm height, thinning of plants was done to retain one healthy plant per hill. IrrigationPre-sowing irrigation was applied in the plots to be sown. Later on the crop was irrigated as and when required during rainy season. Weeding and hoeingFirst weeding and hoeing was done three weeks after sowing and subsequent hoeing’s done at fortnightly interval. Plant protectionTo control insect-pests and diseases the plant protection measures were adopted as per recommendations given in the package of practices for okra in New Delhi conditions. Harvesting and threshingNo picking of green fruit was done throughout the experiment. Mature fruits were allowed to dry on the plant. The fully mature fruits of the plant were harvested.The harvested fruits were further dried in the sun before threshing. After threshing the seed was dried on cemented floor for 2-3 days to reduce the excess seed moisture. Recording of experimental dataThe observations were recorded on ten randomly selected plants from each treatment in each replication. The observations thus recorded were averaged for computation on per plant basis. The details of observations recorded during the course of experimentation are as follows;(a) Plant growth, flowering and pod attributes1. Plant height (cm)The height of randomly selected plants was measured in centimetres, with the help of meter scale, from the base to the apex of the main shoot when floral bud appeared at the terminal position of main shoot. The average height per plant was computed.2. Days to 50 % floweringThe number of days from the date of sowing to date of flower opening (anthesis) in 50 % of the total plants in each plot were counted and taken as days to 50 % flowering.
