The including the psychological, spiritual, social and physical.

The
World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of well-being
in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the
normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to
make a contribution to his or her community” (Stephen et al, 2005).
Neither mental nor physical health can exist alone. Mental, physical, and
social functioning is interdependent.

Mental
health is not just the absence of mental disorder. Mental health is linked to
several aspects of health, including the psychological, spiritual, social and
physical.

The
focus should be on promoting mental health throughout the lifespan to ensure a
healthy start in life for children and to prevent mental disorders in college
students. Mental health is one of the most important public health issues as it
is a contributor to the global burden of disease worldwide. We can understand
it as a state of balance between an individual and his Social world, a state of
harmony between oneself and others. Mental health is the foundation for
well-being and effective functioning for an individual and for a community and
that of women is important both for their own health and for the well-being of
their children and families. Women are more likely than men to be adversely
affected by mental disorders, the most common being anxiety and depressive
disorders.

Mental
health includes two components: a psychological, internal experience of
well-being, and behavioral markers, observable by others, that indicate whether
the individual is able to handle life’s challenges in adaptive ways.
Psychologically we expect mentally healthy individuals to have a psychological
sense of belonging and purpose, control over one’s fate, and satisfaction with
one’s self and one’s existence. Mental health involves the ability to
adequately cope with life’s difficulties and demands, the capacity to
experience joy and happiness when life events call for this, and also to be
able to grieve and live through the painful and tragic times in our lives. Behaviourally,
we expect mentally healthy people to be able to handle various domains of life
reasonably well, as observed and judged by others around them. We expect
mentally healthy people to successfully accomplish basic life functions such as
eating, and sleeping, and also to perform well in the occupational arena, and
to have good and satisfying relationships with others.

Mental
health is a positive concept related to the social and emotional wellbeing of
individuals and communities. The concept is culturally defined, but generally
relates to the enjoyment of life, ability to cope with stresses and sadness,
the fulfilment of goals and potential, and a sense of connections to others.
Mental health is a desirable quality in its own right and is more than the
absence of mental ill-health. It is relevant to all people, regardless of
whether they are currently experiencing, or recovering from, a mental illness.
Mental health and well-being are fundamental to our collective and individual
ability as humans to think, emote, interact with each other, earn a living and
enjoy life. Anand (1989) studied the mental health of high school students and
concluded the mental health of adolescents, their academic achievement, and the
educational and occupational status of parents were positively related. Morris
(2002) conducted a study of mental health knowledge of pre-service and
in-service elementary schools teachers. Sharma (2004) found that the B.Ed.
Students related to stream and gender wise do not differ significantly of six
components of mental health and on overall mental health.

Mental
health is the ability to make adjustment to the external world. It is the
abilities to accept and face the realities of life (Bhatia 1982). It is the
adjustment of a person to another person effectively to face the realities of
life. It is a way of person to think, act and feel when comes in contact with
real life situation. It refers how one feels about himself, one’s life and what
other people feel about him when he faces the real life situations. It is the
evaluation of situation and challenges of life. It is related with effective
coping tendency to face environmental situation with one’s pace and efficiency.
This mental strain is generally expressed in the form of anxiety, hopelessness,
tension and restlessness. Mental health represents the mental peace and
harmony. It represents adjustment problems in every step of life. It reflects
way of thinking, feeling, behaving and one’s attitude towards new situation/problems.   Fox (2000), Edwards (2003), Palaver (2005)
found that various types of physical activities and sports are essential for
health and particularly for mental development. Dehkoda & Saiah (2010)
found that various types of physical activities not only improve the physical
health but they are very useful in decreasing anxiety, depression and causes
happiness among the students. Mental health is indispensable for youth who
copes with so many problems in every walk of life.
