Sara can’t change the embryo, but permits them

Sara Ly, in her article, “Ethics of Designer Babies,” evaluates the repercussions of a real genetically modified baby. She starts by stating that what was once science fiction, is now a real possibility because of the advancements of technology. Furthermore, there is already a technique similar to creating a designer baby called PGD or preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Ly explains that “PGD allows viable embryos to be screened for various genetic traits, such as sex-linked diseases, before implanting them in the mother.” This explains that PGD can’t change the embryo, but permits them to choose the best one. However, it raised the possibility of being able to modify the embryo to have selected traits before implantation therefore, conceptualizing designer babies. The possibility of the existence of designer babies has led to many debates over ethical problems. In the article, those who oppose designer babies, illustrate the prospect of “a division between those that can afford the service and those that cannot.” The outcome of this would be a part of the human race becoming superior to the other. Those who support designer babies present the argument that “parents have a right to prenatal autonomy, which grants them the right to decide the fate of their children.” Since parents already have a say in the way their child’s lives will come out, they argue, it is no different if the parents decide to alter their children’s genetics. The author believes that the world should respond to designer babies with both hope and fear. Ly states that, “designer babies represent great potential in the field of medicine and scientific research, but there remain many ethical questions that need to be addressed.” This article informs the audience on the ethical issues related with designer babies. It presents both sides of the argument on whether modifying genes is good or bad and if it should only be used for health related reasons only.
