King Lear is a famous tragedy play written by William Shakespeare. The main characters represented the characteristic of most people in their social class at that period of time. For example, King Lear was used as a sarcasm of the King/Queen who lived at that time, so as the relationships between the main characters. The play focused heavily on the relationship between King Lear and his daughters, especially Cordelia, his youngest daughter. The play is mainly about Lear, who wants the honour but not the work, which made him split his kingdom into his three daughters. The relationship between Lear and Cordelia is that Cordelia was Lear’s favourite daughter before he asked his daughters who loved him the most, and Cordelia’s honest answer made Lear felt betrayed, but he realized that Cordelia is actually the only daughter who loved him afterwards, and everything was too late. This essay is going to explain the relationship between them. The most obvious relationship between King Lear and Cordelia was the father-daughter relationship. While Lear was not a father who actually loved and cared about his daughters in the play, so he did not know the actual trait of his daughters, that was the reason which made him believed in the magnificent lies of his two elder daughters, Goneril and Regan when he asked about how much they loved him. Those pretty lies baffled Lear, and they made a huge difference with Cordelia’s reply Cordelia says “Nothing, my Lord” She then goes on to say ” I love your majesty according to my bond, no more, no less” (1. 1. 82-88) It made the reckless Lear violent raged. Cordelia, on the other hand, Cordelia loved her king who was also her father but she “cannot have my heart into my mouth” (1.1, 91-92) as she said. Lear was a self-centred, reckless, and gullible character while Cordelia was a loving, brave, and honest character, Shakespeare created a big contract between them. These are characteristic and how it affects their behaviour in the first scene of the first play. King Lear’s opinion in the scene has changed in this scene. The first scene of King Lear opened in the palace of King Lear. King Lear was planning to split his kingdom among his three daughters. Goneril and Regan replied that “A love that makes breath poor and speech unable. Beyond all manner of so much, I love you.” (1.1,60-61). When it’s finally Cordelia’s turn, she answered honestly and it made King Lear frenzy. Lear asked Cordelia to leave the palace. Kent tried to disculpate for Cordelia, he ended put being evicted from the palace. Cordelia bided her sister goodbye and left with the King of France. This scene opens up the whole play and starts the plot. If King Lear wouldn’t have to get mad at Cordelia, everything wouldn’t have happened since Cordelia would have gotten the biggest part of the kingdom since she was Lear’s favourite. So the test that Lear created to measure his daughter’s love was a huge mistake since he did not know his daughters well as said in the last paragraph. In this scene, Cordelia was Lear’s favourite before the test, but she was honest and straight. It caused Lear to feel being betrayed. Cordelia was loyal and stayed loyal even though it was not visible to Lear due to his reckless trait. He disowned Cordelia in return, saying she would be a “Stranger to my heart and me” (1.1.114) Later on, the two elder daughters of Lear planned to discredit the king. They confiscated all the bodyguard away from Lear and asked him to leave their castle. Lear went into the storm. He finally realized that his youngest daughter, Cordelia was the only one who would have loved him and honoured him. When Regan and Goneril were trying to take charge of the kingdom and fight each other, Cordelia tried to help Lear from the French side, but she failed. King Lear finally had the consciousness of the evil trait of Goneril and Regan. The relationship is really important in the play. It has affected the relationship between King of Burgundy and Cordelia, because if King Lear did not feel betrayed, King of Burgundy would still like to marry Cordelia. The relationship also showed that Lear is not a caring and clever character. He did not know his daughters well, which led to the death of himself. The relationship also decided the ending for Cordelia. Her loving and loyal trait to Lear had made her save Lear under a dangerous situation, which eventually killed her. Also, when Lear felt betrayed by Cordelia, it made him announced that Cordelia would not have any connection to them anymore. The decision was awfully wrong. Overall, the play focused heavily on the relationship between King Lear and his daughter Cordelia, his youngest daughter. King Lear’s attitude has changed over the scene and the play. So this relationship showed that being a caring person and knowing the people who actually love and honour you is important, do not be tricked by gorgeous lies.
