How 21st century, one need to stands out

How do you manage your staff? If you still spend a lot of your time controlling others, restraining them and restricting them. This way you are not doing the role of manager actually you are micro-managing your valuable resource which is not at all the role of 21st century manager. If you start to control others, the life become harder for you, moreover the return you get from that is much more less than it should be. (blog, 2012) In today’s business world, people need to be managed in a way that make them realize their power, stretches their contribution, and adds to their value. It can neither be done by restraining them nor by over-supervising their every move in the organization. You can only do it by empowering them. You can only do it by turning into a New-Age-Manager, by becoming a 21st century Manager. The 21st century manager is someone who has left behind the characteristics of the boss and owner. S/he is someone who leads, inspires, motivates, sets an example, empowers, and creates vision. These skills no longer require just the ability to get things done but also the skills to create new possibilities and pathways.Like George Bernard Shaw Said, “Some people see things as they are and ask “Why?” I see things that are not and never were and ask “Why not?” To become successful manager in the 21st century, one need to stands out from others by his/her ability to see possibilities that others don’t see. He or she doesn’t just have a goal for the team to reach, but a vision of something exciting and unique. Furthermore, being creative brings some freshness in the workplace. And that is why creativity is expected everywhere. The management of the company expects some sort of creativity with their manager which brings up sales and eventually creates better profit margin for the company.A 21st century manager should be Self-correcting in nature. Managers need to make the subordinates constantly improve themself and motivates them to try new methods and gain new knowledge. The managers should know that the practices and performances that they have showed and followed in the earlier days may not work well in the current day industry. Thus, they should try to correct themselves so that they could be more compatible and ready with the ever changing industry. They have to create and tear down, build and destroy. They have to set themselves on one course only to make a sharp U-turn and do something else when conditions dictate.Like said by Lech Walesa, “The thing that lies at the foundation of positive change, the way I see it, is service to a fellow human being.” Some people think that manager is a person who just orders his subordinates to follow his/her direction and make them perform their task for the development of the organization, which is not at all true. Today, the managers need to be emphasized with their employees and the staffs so that they can understand them and work along with them as expected. It is very important for the 21st century managers to be good with their staff and maintain healthy relationship with all the team members. Caring and attentive managers are necessary for any organization to grow.Managers of the 21st century should have the ability to study about the changes in trends and technology and should plan and produce strategies that would benefit for the company. With the growing use of collaborating software and other information system like CRM (customer relationship management), SCM (Supply Chain Management), ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) etc. it is very important that manager possess the skills to use these software. Apart from these softwares, managers need to understand the importance of online social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many more. Through the use of these social networking sites the managers are able to connect with his subordinates. Moreover, these networking sites provide information for such managers to plan and make the company more strong. Furthermore, they could participate and get to know more about social events and take initiatives for the welfare of the company. Such sites gather useful information for proper planning of company strategies and plans. Also, it acts as a bridge to connect with various other groups and can also lead to an increase in the company’s influence and reach (Reddy).Being a 21st century manager, one must be knowledgeable about Globalization as it is one of the most influencing factors for doing business in the current world. Globalization has changed the way of doing things. What was once done in field of management is no longer relevant. The way of doing a business and way of managing the business is changes. The environment is more dynamic hence, it arises the challenge for modern day manager. Rather than focusing on planning, controlling and staffing managers need to come out of this traditional role and look at the broader picture like workforce diversity, cultural diversity, how to penetrate global market? Etc. The managers need to come up with strategy as such that they can increase its global market share. Apart from this manager must understand the importance of technology in success of business. In this digitalized era production to supply/marketing everything is digitalized thus manger need to have a sound knowledge on how this technology is shaping the industry today. Manager need to prepare themselves such that they can tackle the global forces that will impact the organization.  The changing way of doing business has changed the role of manager. Today, the people of different background, culture, ethnicity etc. works for the organization. Managing this workforce diversity is a challenge for today’s 21st century manager. In order to manage this diverse workforce manager should be open minded and should analyze the discomfort among employees (if any) and should develop sensitivity to cultural variation. Moreover, when the Multinational Company is working on foreign land they are exposed to new culture. Here comes a role of 21st century manager. They now need to minimize the disagreements caused by cultural misunderstandings toward another culture in workplace. Managers should implement diversity training and open conversations about diversity in the workplace so that employees can discuss misunderstandings and the environment become safe and productive. For example, some companies deal with foreign delegates and they even provide sales provision in foreign countries as well. And to handle such external activities smoothly, a manager needs to understand such level of cultural difference in different countries. Therefore, it is expected from every manager that the person needs to understand all sorts of culture and their limitations so that the company can create sales in that particular country. And to make that happen, a manager needs to be better with handling cultural changes.In a quickly changing world, managing talented human capital will be a prime ingredient of business success. Managers will have to accommodate the shift of power from owners and senior management to knowledge worker (Stumpf, 1999). Managers will have to invest increasing percentages of their revenues in attracting, developing and retaining competent professionals. To achieve the level of innovation required for competitive advantage today, managers need to balance the power throughout organizations. Employees need to be more fully engaged in making strategic decisions as well as doing more of the planning and organizing of their own work. To break the monopoly of the organization, employees need to take part in strategic thinking.  Such ownership is the only way to achieve deep engagement. As a result, managers need to do less telling and more asking “What do you think?” The social contracts that the managers make with their people will be as important as the value propositions they convey to the marketplace and their customers.Where ever possible, the manager should not forget the importance of occasional face to face meetings for building and maintaining relationships. This is important for new teams, and for introducing new team members to an existing team. As a 21st century manager, understanding how to lead a remote team and doing so effectively will likely be critical (Kasriel, 2017). More than that, the manager’s success is judged by how well they can recognize talented people and successfully engage and lead them to produce great business results.Most of the time, managers are so stubborn that they never accept their mistake, even if they are wrong. But being stubborn with one’s decision can never lead them to be successful in their career and especially with a manager. And that is why a manager need to understand that if a person can start learning from his mistakes, then there is a possibility that he can succeed in their life eventually. Also, he should be highly responsible so that he could own up for his own mistakes instead of blaming it on somebody else. This prevents any future disagreements and negative dialogues within the company.Being a 21st century manager, one should not only focus on achieving higher revenue and profits but also focus towards making world a better place. They should not forget their corporate social responsibilities and should concern about different aspects like global warming, pollution, labor rights and work toward decreasing the negative externalities towards society caused by them. Setting the ethical standards for the way of doing business is also an important task of 21st century managers. They have to maintain the same standards as an individual person and as an organizational unit. However, any business should keep its original purpose of functioning as making profit. Balancing the standards of profitability and burden of social responsibilities is not an easy task. But as a 21st century manager it’s his/her duty to set standards of corporate ethics with high degree of morale.In conclusion, it is obvious the ability to stimulate change, excellent planning capabilities, and ethics are essential traits a manger should possess and utilize in leading organizations in the 21st century. These traits help the manager focus on success for their organization; as well, they are traits subordinates look for in their leader. By using these traits, a manager can place him/herself on a path that can lead to success. Moreover, just as no one wants to be micromanaged, no one wants to be micromanager. But with a commitment to focus on the big picture and on motivating the employees, one can redirect his/her efforts to be the most effective manager, become a 21st century manager.
