Growing world. My interest in engineering originally stemmed

Growing up in a digital generation, I have always been fascinated by new technologies and products that surround me in the modern world. My interest in engineering originally stemmed from seeing advertisements and product releases from innovative companies like Apple, Dyson and Tesla and looking at the way their products were designed and developed. In the past year, while exploring my options, I have developed my enthusiasm for such innovation and finally become certain of my career path. My innate curiosity and passion of learning more led me to look for solutions and question existing issues in my day to day surroundings. I found design as a device to provoke change.I come from a creative background and so far have been mainly pursuing Graphic Design and have also been working as a Graphic Designer for a local firm for some time. However, until recently I had not been completely certain of what exactly I wanted to pursue within the creative field. Personally, I felt that Graphic Design would confine me to certain media and outcomes. After studying Product Design at GCSE and AS Level, I did consider Industrial Design as a career prospect, but felt that I would also be largely confined to the form and aesthetic elements of design. Admittedly, I hadn’t thought much of engineers previously and didn’t appreciate the crucial role of engineering in the design process. However, with the technical insight of engineering and the creative thinking of design, I believe that I will be able to synergise and find innovative solutions to existing and potential problems in a rapidly changing world. This year, I am studying A Level Maths independently in order to familiarise and gain a formative standing in the engineering realm. I believe that I have the tenacity for grasping complex engineering concepts and applying them to real world issues. I am currently working part-time as a Graphic Designer and CAD Modeller. This has allowed me to gain a closer insight in the industry and develop my creative process as well as myself as a designer. I have also worked in other retail and industrial jobs in the past, which have enabled me to not only further develop my own practical skills, but also expand my knowledge and experience beyond the usual A-level syllabus. These jobs have proven to be very beneficial as I have gained some valuable transferable skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving.I am inspired and challenged by fresh environments and therefore find travelling to be quite satisfying. This year, I visited Berlin and Stockholm; two very influential centres of design. DIY is another thing I like to do in my spare time as I find it very rewarding to be able to implement my product design knowledge and skills, as well as enjoy the fruits of it myself. Occasionally, I participate in design competitions which allow me to expand my creative portfolio and hone my skill set especially with CAD programs such as AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor and the Adobe Suite. I believe its important to constantly work on evolving and developing as a creative.I am applying to join the Product Design Engineering course as it would equip me with the skills required to pursue my ambition of becoming a versatile designer and bring my creative vision to fruition. Studying this course, will allow me to combine the disciplines of design and engineering to be at the forefront of innovation and change.
