Smoking, obesity, genetics, family history, high blood pressure, certain medications, gender, race, and work place exposures are many of the causes. In my case, I will be more susceptible to the cancer through genetic, hereditary, and family history. Also, the fact that men are twice as likely to develop them as women. I have suffered from kidney stones for over 6 years. The stones my kidneys produce are calcium stones.
There is no cure for the production of kidney stones. I have undergone lithotripsy as a method to break up large stones unable to pass. I have been told to modify my diet and to drink plenty of clear liquids. I have also been asked to stay away from specific foods that may cause kidney stones. I still pass stones regularly, at least 6 a year. My father has had a kidney removed due to cancer. This puts me much above risk for kidney cancer. It has been mentioned that a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of getting kidney cancer.
Diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in naturally occurring antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that aid the regeneration of cell structures in the body and protect against cell damage. Antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E, lycopene, and beta-carotene work to prevent the bonding of free radicals and promote regular cell replication and function. Vegetables are extremely rich in them and should be consumed in quantities of 5-8 servings a day. For the prevention of kidney cancer, a diet of fruits and vegetables that are rich in carotenoids are particularly useful.
These vegetables usually have an orange or reddish color to them and include carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and squash. Nuts and whole grains are also recommended because they reduce the formation of calcium within the kidneys that could lead to cancer. A Swedish study indicated that a weekly consumption of fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and krill is associated with a decreased risk of kidney cancer. I personally will not incorporate any type of fish into my diet. I do not like the taste, texture, or smell.
