Many people think that hookah is a safer way to smoke tobacco but its not. A research done by the University of Maryland shows that smoking tobacco through water does not filter out cancer-causing chemicals. “Water-filtered smoke can damage the lungs and heart as much as cigarette smoke. But hookah smoke does not burn the lungs when inhaled because it is cooled through the water in the base of the hookah. Even though the smoke is cooled, it still contains carcinogens and it is still very unhealthy.” There is also snuff and chewing tobacco. Snuff is a preparation of smokeless tobacco made from pulverised tobacco leaves. It’s inhaled into the nasal cavities. Chewing tobacco is taking smokeless tobacco and pinning it against the gums, cheeks, or bottom/top lip in the mouth. Snuff and chewing tobacco can cause mouth and nasal cancer. This can result in blood concentration of nicotine.Since the early 1900’s advertising for tobacco products have been used. Tobacco retailers have reached a wide variety of consumers. They have various marketing schemes to lure people into smoking. Rather it seems to reach people who are weak minded or people who have a lot of stress. A study shows low-income neighborhood are more likely to have tobacco retailers near schools than other neighborhoods. Another study found that there is 69% more tobacco retailers per capita in low-income areas. Tobacco retailers are also more often found in areas that have low-income minority populations.Tobacco companies also try to go after a young age group. The majority of smokers begin before the age of 18, which is 87%. Actual ? of smokers started at the age of fourteen. Many tobacco companies pay millions to have actors smoke in tv shows and movies that people watch.Tobacco companies have also been found to go after racial and ethnic minorities. Menthols have been marketed to black communities. 85% of all black smokers use menthol cigarettes which is almost three times as much as white smokers. A survey done by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health service Administration from 2011 showed that people with mental illness or drug abuse disorders make up for 40% of people who smoke in the U.S. People with these mental illness have a common cause of death. Which includes cancer, lung cancer, and heart disease. Those diseases can be caused by smoking. Aside from the outrageous marketing schemes, tobacco can cause a number of outrageous medical issues and side effects. Smoking tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. It’s actually a factor in 4 out of the top five leading causes of death. Smoking can cause strokes and coronary heart disease. Smoking tobacco kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, guns, and drugs combined. It also causes cancer and can damage nearly every organ in the body, including the lungs. The primary way that smoking causes cancer is by harming our DNA, including the main genes that ensure us against cancer.
