from the traditional bullying, it’s differed from each other with the

such as instant messaging, registering to sites with fake identity, harassing
and spreading rumours online. As technology has advanced itself, it’s become
harder to stop bullying, bullying has taken form as cyberbullying within the
online community. Social factors also plays an important part within
cyberbullying, the factors are mains reasons of why cyberbullying takes place,
and it makes it easy for bullies to choose their victims. being affected to
cyberbullying is harder to detect than bullying itself as it doesn’t leave a
physical mark, it leaves a marks which is not seem however has a long term
effect on a person’s life. In most cases it’s proven that teenagers are mainly
the age group who are affected to cyberbullying than other age group.  Social factors involving religion,
race, lifestyle and socioeconomic are the different factors which can have an
impact on cyberbullying.

cyberbullying and the effects caused on teenagers through online community.  This chapter will carry out a continued study
based the topic however constructed with a more up-to-date research.  Although, there are many research revolved
around the affects and the factors causing cyberbullying, some many have argued
different point causing cyberbullying through psychological and bystander point
of view.  Fewer researchers have focused
on how social factors plays an important role of cyberbullying however, in some
cases have fail to correlate the evolution of internet access to an increase of
teenagers facing daily stress, fears and isolation causing mental and emotional
breakdown.  Consider educating teenagers
more about cyberbullying could have a greater result in decreasing the
percentage of cyberbullying.

an ‘a new form’ has been created involving the tradition of bullying, the
traits from bullying has been captured to form a new dimension within the
virtual online community.




                       The cyberbullying
revolution started through the misuse of electronic media. There’s been a rapid
increase of social media allowing teenagers to network around worldwide.
Different websites have been created such as Facebook, Msn, and Instagram
allowing anyone to create accounts. This leads to “young bullies…employ to
harass their victims from afar away” (Niblack, 2013) via registering to fake accounts to
message or posting on the other’s page. Recent features such as profile
pictures, location, occupation and personal interest makes cyberbullying easier
as well as allows another individual to feel isolated (Lawnow, 2012). Young people are not aware of the
consequences of misusing the internet for personal use. With a high amount of
social media websites and accounts created, it leads to a number of victims
being faced to cyberbullying. Technology influences the rating of
cyberbullying, the smarter the technologies gets, and the more apps/websites
are being formed allowing communication to be more viral.


Technology had played an enormous part of cyberbullying, it makes it
easier for teenagers to communicate having a mask behind of their profile. This
widens the communication path between friends, families and strangers (Today, 2016). Digital
transmission of text, voice and graphical are used on social media platforms
enabling an increase of cyberbullying. Chat rooms, instant messaging, my space
along with other social media sites have a mutual purpose of connecting
different users around the world with each other, this makes communication
easier. This may also lead to a new friendship or relationship. The social site
also allows users to share and express their thoughts with other users along
with images and video, this all happens from the use of technology (Lawnow, 2012). As technologies are
becoming advance, the percentage of teenager online has been increasing. As
they’re online using social media, they remained unware of the consequences
that can be led by using the internet. Cyberbullying is defined to be
intentional harm caused through the internet (Chicagonow, 2013).With usage of technological device, it
makes it easy for young users to communicate via chatrooms, instant message,
text messaging and building up profiles on social media site.

Social media is a huge role which plays within technology
leading to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying happens on the net through social media

                                     Within the
research completed by (Context, 2016), it states there are differences and
some shared characteristic between cyberbullying and traditional bullying.
Traditional bullying is divided into 3 different categories; Verbal bullying,
physical bullying and social bullying. 
Verbal bullying is “when an individual uses verbal language
(e.g., insults, teasing, etc) to gain power over his or her peers” (Software, 2017) . As defined above,
it’s a directed opened face communication between the bully and victim. Words
alone and harm a child’s long term future, it can build an impact overtime
which can “affect one’s self image, and affect someone in
emotional and psychological ways. This type of bullying can lead to low
self-esteem, as well as depression and other problems” (Statistics, 2017). This is usually harmful to
teenagers as it rises to be a huge concern when they grow up; their thoughts
changes becoming more negative about themselves. This is type of bullying is
hard to detect as no physical marks are left behind or can be proven. Physical
bullying is another level from verbal bullying, this consist more of hurting “someone’s
body or damages their possessions. Stealing, shoving, hitting, fighting, and
destroying property” (Respect, 2014).  This makes the bully seem more powerful with
intentions to cause damage to the other user. This is very common during school
period, there are several reasons which made cause this e.g. to fit in with
peer, social factor reasons (lifestyle, race, and status). Lastly there’s
social bullying, this is similar to verbal bullying however it’s done through
indirect. “It can happen in two ways: either by trying to exclude somebody and
make them feel unwanted, or by gaining somebody’s trust and then breaking it” (Respect,

within the research completed by (Context, 2016) “traditional bullies
and cyberbullies are equally interested in causing their victims pain” from
both bullies, the purpose remains to cause harm ‘causing their victims pain’.
Therefore, the process are similar to each other whether if it takes place
physically (traditional bullying) or online (cyberbullying).  In both cycle, it allows the bully to feel
more powerful and the victim to be felt feeling “lost, trapped, helpless and worthless” (Nobullying, 2015).

                            There are also
differences that differs Cyberbullying and traditional bullying to each other. One
of the main fact is that cyberbullying takes online whereas, traditional
bullying takes place face to face. It’s easier to bully someone online than it
is to do it face to face, whereas with the traditional bullying process, the
bully would have to recognise and know how their victim is. Online community
makes this easier to bully someone as social media provides information about
every user making targets anonymous without having to get know them. With
cyberbully it can also takes place (on any social media platform) and any time.
Before the technology got advanced, both victims and bully would have to be
located in the same place whereas, now online makes it easier to post, comment
and message anyone without having to be in the same location. Lastly
cyberbullying is more viral, information, words can get spread easily by
exposing victims to the rest of the world this can involve tagging the victim’s
name or posting an image with a negative comment.   (ICDL, 2016)

                             There are different
reasons behind cyberbullying, one in many would be caused of social factors.
Social factors are characteristic which has an impact upon an individual’s action
such as the way they behave and live. There are several factors which are taken
into account whilst analysing the different factors; religion, race, lifestyle
and socioeconomic can affect an individual and their family in many ways. E.g.
income can affect an individual education leading to a poor income job. (Ong, 2017). As stated within a
case study conducted by (Field, n.d.)
“A commonly reported reason is because you are, allegedly, overweight or
too fat”, this is part of the social factors ‘lifestyle’, how an individual
eats can affect their lives along with other’s thoughts on them. This mainly
happens during high school years where the bully finds happiness in harassing
overweight victims.

Farzaneh, a young 15-year-old girl suffered from cyberbullying based on her
appearance. She was already bullied at school however, once she signed up to
Facebook everything started getting worse. As quoted on the case study site “I
got messages from people telling me to kill myself and saying that the world
would be better off without me and that everybody hated me” (Victims, 2011). After rumours
started, this changed Natalie’s self-esteem causing depression and anxiety
eventually self-harming. According to the case study above it shows that social
factors can have a huge impact on cyberbullying. It plays huge part as it gives
the bully a valid reason to pick its victims. This case study proves to have a
combination of social factors and cyberbullying. As stated above ‘rumours
stated’, this is known to be a social bullying from cyberbullying along with
appearance is known to be a lifestyle from social factors.  

    According to (Lipsett, 2008) their research shows
that one in every four kids have been bullied due to their faith, this is part
of a social factor. Their faiths can be expressed in many different ways such
as what they wear or recognisable symbols. “Cyber-bullying was experienced in
6% of cases” (Lipsett, 2008), this shows that
cyberbullying plays a part in this. Usually when registering for a new social
media site, it would require the user to post their image (showing what the
user wears) along with fill in information about themselves such as their
religion. This is visible to everyone. 




According to the chart below it shows that teenagers from the age of
11-18 are affected the most. From the age of 11-12 that’s when teenagers gain
access to the internet, without known the consequences they start misusing it.
Technology influences the rate of cyberbully to increase, different social
media sites give access to perform instant messaging, comments and post on
another users wall. Amongst other age group, it shows after reaching 20 years
old, the rate starts going down. The population of children being bullied have
increase (NSPCC, 2018).
This causes several impact on a child’s future both mentally and emotionally.
