Ankle injuries are the most common of the bone and joint injuries. They usually happen during sports, activities that involve a lot of movement of the ankle, and jumping. If only the bone gives away and tears then it is considered a sprained ankle, which is very common especially in sports. But if the bone gives away and breaks it is called an ankle fracture, which can turn out to be really serious and can lead to a person having to get surgery.
Fractures usually happen by rolling the ankle in or out, twisting the ankle side-to-side, too much flexing or extending the joint too much, or too much force applied to the joint when coming down on it. (Mostly after jumping. ) The ankle joint is made up of 3 main parts. The tibia, which is the main bone of the lower leg and it, makes up the anklebone. Next there is the fibula, which is the smaller bone in the lower leg that makes up the outside of the anklebone. Last there is the talus, which are lumps of bone on the inside and outside of the ankle.
Usually when you fracture your ankle you will feel pain around these areas. Which leads me to the symptoms you should look out for, if you think that you might have a fracture ankle. Usually the pain will cause in these areas, but not just that. Often pain will not come from the exact area of the fracture. It usually sends a shooting pain to a different part of the ankle or maybe even down the foot. You might think that your foot is broken, but really it’s just the pain being shot somewhere else.
Mostly, when you have a really bad fracture the pain will be shot up into your shins, and maybe even be sent up towards your knees. There have been recordings of people feeling pain near their knees when it turns out they had a fractured ankle. Swelling is another good sign to look out for when referring to a broken ankle. Around the area of the fracture the area will bruise up to a blackish purple color, if it is really bad. Swelling is a good sign that there was soft tissue damage. If there is blue around the swelling that means there were some tearing and some bleeding.
Usually, bruising takes up to two days for it to be visible, and even after a week the bruising can keep on getting worst and worst. Usually the pain is so strong that people are not able to walk on a fractured ankle. The best treatment for fractured ankles is to stay off the injured ankle, so you make sure not to make it worst. This means, to be on crutches at all times. Because the littlest amount of weight you put on the fracture can make it a lot worst, and you don’t want that to happen because that can lead a patient having to get surgery.
Also, not staying off it can cause it to heal the wrong way, which leads to surgery also. Another important thing you should do to speed up the healing process is to keep the ankle elevated as much as you can to bring down the swelling and pain. That doesn’t mean keep it above the ground like an inch, what your suppose to do is keep it above your heart. That way more blood is being taken away from the injured area, which speeds up the process of healing a lot. Also, you should apply cold packs and ice to the injured area to stop the swelling and pain. You should ice for a half hour every hour.
You don’t want to put the injured area in a bucket of cold ice because that will just numb the pain, it won’t help it heal. For medication, ibuprofen is probably your best medicine to take for ankle injuries. They act to decrease inflammation and also are a huge painkiller. Take these up to three times a day; this will cause your ankle to heal much faster than it would without this medication. Usually doctors will put a splint on the broken ankle for a few days up too 3 weeks. If they don’t do this, then this could either mean you don’t have a really bad fracture and they don’t think that you need it, or you might have an ankle sprain.
They will take it off once the swelling around the joint has gone down a lot, which can take a really long time depending on how bad the injury is and how well you have been taking care of it. If the anklebones are not aligned properly, then the doctor will try his hardest to realign them before the patient goes into a splint. If the doctor cannot realign the anklebone, then the patient will probably have to under go surgery. The patient definitely has to go through surgery if there is any bone showing through the skin.

These braces help you to keep your ankle in the right place so you don’t twist it to somewhere where it isn’t suppose to bend. A lot of players in football wear this because that sport consists of a lot of work with the ankle. The recovery time for ankles usually injuries heal on their own when you are not putting weight on it it. Usually it takes 4 to 8 weeks for the ankle to heal properly. That’s depending on how bad the injury was. The worst part about ankle injuries are the soft tissue that are involved. They are what get torn and are very hard to heal.
You can tell that there has been some soft tissue tearing by the color of your foot or ankle. If it is blue and purple around the injured area then there is a very good chance that you have torn some soft tissue. Even though Eversion sprains are less common than Inversion sprains they may take longer to heal. “A Dorsiflexion sprain is when the anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments are torn with forced dorsiflexion and are often injured in conjunction with severe sprain of the medial and lateral ligament complexes. These sprains often take months to heal.
Sprains are graded on a scale of 1 to 3 – mild, moderate or severe – reflecting the relative amount of tearing to the ligaments. Initially the ankle is swollen, painful, and may turn eccyhmotic (bruised). ” says Doctor Muett. He later goes on to say in this article that, “The bruising, and the initial swelling, is due to ruptured blood vessels from the tearing of the soft tissues. Most of the initial swelling is actually bleeding into the surrounding tissues. In a grade 1 sprain, there is some stretching or perhaps tearing of the ligamentous fibers with little or no joint instability. Mild pain occurs with also swelling. So as you can tell, there are a lot of injuries that can happen when it comes to the ankle. The ankle is a very delicate part of the body and we need it for most, if not all, the activities we do in life. They take a lot of time to heal and can be a huge pain to go through therapy. It may take a lot of time to heal, but you have to make sure that it is back to one hundred percent before you start using your ankle like you have used in the past.
If you ever wonder if you have a broken ankle check for some soft tissue tearing, which can be found if there is color around the injury. If you have lost a lot of movement, that is another good sign that it may be broken or sprained.
